Council chiefs have spent £1,900 setting up an “alternative drinking area” in a secluded area of a south London park for homeless alcoholics. They acted after people complained that drunks were loitering by the entrance to Brockwell Park and shouting foul-mouthed abuse at locals. Newly-planted shrubs and wood-bark underfoot lend a rustic air, with side tables ideal for a can of strong cider and a bin for the empties. The idea has proved so successful that it may now be replicated in other parts of the country. The Sunday Telegraph 12/03/06 page 13
