Gordon Brown has announced an increase of 1p on the price of a pint of beer, 4p on the price of a bottle of wine and 7p on the price of a packet of 20 cigarettes. Increases to the price of cigarettes, which the Chancellor said was for "public health reasons" will begin from 6 o'clock this evening, with the price rises on beer and wine enforced from midnight Sunday. In his budget speech the Chancellor also announced that duty on spirits would be frozen.
