The latest official statistics on alcohol consumption show binge-drinking is continuing to rise. More than 20% of men drank more than eight units of alcohol on a single day during the week in 2002 and more than 9% of women drank more than six units in a single day. The figures also showed binge-drinking was more common among the young and there was a growing problem of women drinking more than the “safe” level of 14 units a week.
