Subway, the US sandwich bar brand, is currently opening 30 sites a month in the UK and plans to have about 650 sites open by the end of the year.
It recently passed the 500-site mark when its first airport site opened in Bristol earlier this month. It currently has 522 sites. It aims to have more than 2,000 stores open by the year 2010.
It is now the seventh biggest eating out brand in the UK. By the end of the year Subway will, according to M&C figures, be the fourth biggest with around 650 stores.
McDonald’s is currently the biggest by site numbers with 1,250 outlets, followed by Upper Crust with about 1,000, Burger King with 700, KFC with 600, Pizza Hut has about 595 and JD Wetherspoon has 575
Last year Subway, which operates in this country purely through franchises, opened 237 stores.
