Nearly half a million people in the UK have signed petitions against the so-called Pasty Tax, which will see a 20% rate of VAT applied on pasties and pies. According to The Sun, almost 310,000 customers of Greggs has signed its Save Our Savouries petition, while tens of thousands have added their names to petitions at other bakeries. The petitions will be delivered to Chancellor George Osborne at Downing Street tomorrow as part of a protest march by hundreds of bakers. Ken McMeikan, chief executive at Greggs, said: “This just proves how unpopular this proposed tax is. The Government has to see sense and listen to ordinary hard-working people.”
