Westminster City Council has turned down a new licence request for the Cirque nightclub at the Hippodrome, located on Cranbourn Street, London. Following the recommendation of the Metropolitan Police, the council’s Licensing Committee decided that the nightclub posed a threat to public safety, and used powers recently granted by the Licensing Act 2003 to effectively close the landmark West End venue. In recent months, Cirque has been plagued by violence. According to police reports, nine serious assaults have been taken place on the premises since April 2004, while a firearms incident cause injury to two clubgoers in August this year. The police feared that the escalation of violent conduct would inevitably lead to fatalities.
