New openings kept The Restaurant Group (TRG), owner of Frankie and Benny’s, moving last year, although the snow in the final months of 2010 hit the business hard. TRG opened 24 new restaurants last year – up on 2009 – and turnover for the 53 weeks to 2 January 2011 was up 7% year-on-year. Like-for-like sales, at outlets open longer than a year, were just 1% ahead of 2009 and TRG said the snow that paralysed the UK during November/December had had a significant impact, although trading since had been strong. Andrew Page, chief executive of TRG, said: “We had to cope with some very challenging conditions last year. Our people responded magnificently and this, combined with the strength of our brands, enabled the group to produce another year of profitable progress. We will be looking to build further on this in 2011.” The company plans to open between 22 to 27 restaurants in the coming year.
