English wine is marketing itself as a premium brand on the back of critical acclaim and success in international competitions. Sales rose 30% last year and its share of the £9bn UK market rose from 0.25% to 0.3%. Chapel Down Winery, Britain’s largest producer, does not see English wine ever occupying more than 1.5% of the UK market because the industry does not have the scale in terms of supply and there is limited farmland suitable for producing the quality of grapes needed.
