The number of people shopping on the high street fell by 7% in December compared with the year before, a survey suggests. Synovate Retail Performance, which provided the figure, said that the fall was worse than the 4.2% decline it was expecting. The drop in footfall, which was attributed to the snowy weather, goes some way to explaining why so many retailers have had to rush out profit warnings since Christmas.
