A government minister has suggested that a new Bank Holiday to celebrate “Britishness” should be marked by drinking. Liam Byrne, the immigration minister, also suggests morris dancing, multi-cultural carnivals and anything else that can be done cheaply to get people involved. The Sunday Times says his pamphlet of 27 ways to celebrate a national day “in effect admits that the all-day consumption of booze is a core element of British culture”. TV presenter Andrew Marr, author of A History of Modern Britain, commented that drinking seemed to be our national sport. He added: “We’re very good at it – drinking to excess, that is.” The date of the proposed new Bank Holiday has yet to b set.
