Starbucks Via instant coffee has hit $100 million in sales since its debut 10 months ago. Via, which Starbucks hopes to build into a billion-dollar business, was launched initially in the US last year, where the bulk of its sales have come from but is now also available in Britain, Canada and Japan. By the end of 2011, Starbucks expects to have Via, which is on sale in Tesco in the UK, in 40,000 locations. The coffee chain said that Via now has a 30% market share of the $330 million premium single serve/pod coffee category. The company said it also expected Via to have a “slightly positive contribution” to earnings in the financial year to 4th October. Howard Schultz, chief executive at Starbucks, said: “We are continuing to drive steady increases in Via distribution. In the next few weeks, we will announce new product innovation as well as an additional international market entry for Starbucks Via.”
