Starbucks insisted it was not trying to compete with traditional Parisian cafes on the opening of an outlet in the centre of Paris yesterday. It is targeting Americans in the City or French people with a love of all things American. It hopes curiosity will also tempt locals and then convert them to regular customers. The Times says that whether Starbucks catches on in Paris depends on whether the French still want their cafes "to be places not only for eating and drinking, but also for meeting, writing, thinking, talking, falling in (and out of) love".
