Whitbread is to explore new avenues in which to roll out its Costa Coffee brand, including further openings at universities after a successful trial, as it looks to add 700 sites to its estate by 2016. The company has been trialling its first campus site at Warwick University, which is reportedly generating sales of £18,000 a week. It has since opened a second site at Nottingham University and plans to add further sites in Birmingham, Coventry and Northampton. The group is also understood to be looking at opening sites in hospitals, plus further units in Tesco store and more in conjunction with Odeon cinemas, with which it already operates Costas. Earlier this year, Costa announced plans to operate up to 10% of its estate as drive-thrus and opened its first site in Nottingham in May. It has since opened a drive-thru in Swindon and has a further six sites in the pipeline for the coming year. Costa plans to double to 3,500 stores worldwide and £1.3 bn system sales over the next five year.
