A cancer-causing chemical called Acrylamide has been found in chips served by KFC, McDonald’s and Burger King. Elevated levels have also been found in hand-fried vegetable crisps from Prince Charles’s Duchy Originals brand. Scientists do not know how Acrylamide forms, but believe that in the cases of cooked food it could be the mixing of amino acids and reducing sugars when heated above 120C Smoking cigarettes and drinking large amounts of coffee or prune juice can also increase levels in the body. Studies have shown that high levels can increase the risk of bowel, bladder and kidney cancers. The Daily Mail 13/09/08 page 5
